You can also travel with a pack from one point to another. You will need the same basic equipment as a backpacker – and the same amount of planning. You will not want to carry a tent on your bicycle, and other than energizing snacks for the ride, you won’t want the weight of food either. Plan your accommodation in advance so you won’t have problems on the trip.

Plan your route carefully, and be realistic about your capabilities – and those of anyone cycling with you. Allow time for unforeseen events and pit stops.

Because you are mountain biking, you won’t want to stick to the tar roads. You may veer into private property on offroad trails. You may need permission and/or permits to enter some areas, so be sure to research your route well and arrange as much of this type of issue as early as possible.

Topographical maps can be of great help on a mountain biking trip, as they will show you single track paths and elevations so you can get a better idea of the scale of the trip you are planning. Steep hills will slow you down.

Limiting the weight on the bike will improve your speed. South Africa and Europe have great places for mountain biking trips. Find a base accommodation between trails. You can see a different piece of the destination every day. Biking gives you scenic views that you can’t find looking through a car window. This also keeps you healthy.
